Does the Defining Gel contain proteins?
No. This natural hair gel focuses on nourishing, moisturizing and defining curls.
How much Defining Gel do I need?
Guidelines:
- Less hair: 1 grape-sized amount
- Normal density: 2 large grape-sized amounts
- Lots of hair: 3 grape-sized amounts (apply in sections to ensure all hairs are saturated)
Is the Defining Gel suitable for all hair types?
For type 1 and 2, the gel will primarily activate texture, while for type 3 and 4, it will define and control frizz.
- Type 1: Straight hair – No curls or waves in sight. This hair type reflects a lot of light, but can sometimes lack volume.
- Type 2: Wavy hair – A beautiful balance between straight and curly, with S-shaped waves ranging from subtle to clearly present.
- Type 3: Curly hair – Well-defined curls, often spiral-shaped.
- Type 4: Coily hair – Kinky hair with a tight texture that has small curl patterns. It is often drier and more fragile.
Is the Defining Gel Curly Girl Method approved?
Yes, our gel meets the requirements of the Curly Girl Method. It is safe for all hair textures.
Can I use the Defining Gel if I have colored hair?
Yes, you can.
Do you recommend the Defining Gel for gray hair?
Our gel is also ideal for gray hair.
What is a 'curl cast' and what does it do?
Hair gel can form a hard gel crust, known as a 'curl cast'. This 'curl cast' helps your curls dry in shape, making them better defined and reducing frizz. Once the curls are dry, the gel can be easily 'scrunched' or squeezed out.
Our Defining Gel forms a very light 'curl cast'. Unlike gels that leave a hard curl cast and are sometimes difficult to scrunch out of your hair, our gel is easier to use. It's really dummy-proof!
What is scrunching and is it necessary with the Defining Gel?
Scrunching is squeezing your hair to activate your texture. You do this on wet hair with product or on dry hair to remove your gel cast.
Will the Defining Gel make my curls feel stiff and sticky?
We understand your concern, but rest assured: our hair gel is specially developed so that your curls feel soft and pleasant, without product residue, stickiness or stiffness. Scrunch your hair when it's dry to loosen the curls and create a softer look.
Will this natural hair gel weigh down my curls?
No, the Defining Gel is light and focuses on hold, definition, and a hydration boost. This hair gel does not contain any heavy ingredients.
I have straight hair, can I use this hair gel?
The Defining Gel is primarily intended to bring out your natural hair texture. If you have very straight hair, there's a good chance there are few movement patterns in your hair. But maybe you have waves without realizing it? Our product won't suddenly give you a head full of curls, but it could be that you have more movement in your hair than you thought ;-) At Mellon, it's our mission to connect everyone as much as possible with their natural texture!
Is this natural hair gel also good for wavy hair?
Absolutely! The beauty of our Defining Gel is that you can use it on all types of textures.
How often do you use the defining gel?
We recommend using this natural hair gel every time after you wash your hair. Do your curls lose their definition as the days go by? Then you can easily refresh your hair by wetting it a bit and scrunching in some gel again. You can apply this trick several times a week. The more often you activate your texture, the clearer it will become.
Do I need to rinse out the gel afterwards?
No, you apply the gel last in your hair routine. So you don't rinse it out. You wait until your hair is completely dry and then you squeeze (or scrunch) your hair loose.
Can I comb my hair when using the gel?
Some curly girls and boys find it helpful to distribute the gel evenly with a wide-toothed comb, while others prefer to just use their hands. Once you've applied the gel, let your hair dry without combing it again. Otherwise, you'll break the 'curl cast' and end up with a frizzy look (and you don't want that, do you? 😉)
Do I also use other styling products in combination with the gel?
This depends on your hair type and personal preference. Do you have fine, wavy hair or an oily scalp? Then we recommend avoiding extra styling products or applying them sparingly. This prevents your curls from becoming too heavy. If, on the other hand, you have a full head of curls and like to use extra styling products? That's definitely possible. The Defining Gel is a light formula that can be easily combined with other hair products.
Can I apply the hair gel to my scalp?
Yes, the Defining Gel is a light formula that won't make your scalp greasy or weigh down your hair. Apply the gel from roots to ends, but avoid spreading it directly on the scalp. It's not harmful, but also not necessary. So you don't need to massage your scalp with the gel – that's superfluous. 😉
I'm a man, can I also use this gel as a styling gel?
Of course you can! Keep in mind that this gel does not give the same result as a hair wax.
Will this hair gel leave product flakes in my hair?
No, with correct use of the gel this will not happen.
If you use too much product or if your hair has trouble with the combination of different styling products, you may experience 'build-up'. Experiment with the amount that suits your hair type.
The hold factor is not what I expected or what I'm used to
The Defining Gel, as its name suggests, primarily defines. It is not comparable to a hold gel. For firmness, you need a hold gel in addition to the Defining Gel. The Defining Gel forms your texture, while the hold gel maintains it. In the spring of 2025, we will launch our hold gel, which perfectly complements our Defining Gel. Please note: do not use too much hold gel to avoid heaviness and flakes. We recommend using the Defining Gel first, as it optimally brings out your texture. Therefore, a Defining Gel is your base and priority, while the hold gel fixes the work of the Defining Gel. For a casual look, a Defining Gel alone is often sufficient. Anti-frizz, airiness, and definition is what we promise with the defining gel.
May I use this product if I am pregnant?
This product can be safely used during pregnancy.
