How much shampoo do I need?
You need less of a natural and concentrated product than of a synthetic variant. However, this does not mean that you should use too little, because then you run the risk of not washing your hair thoroughly enough. But, what is "enough"? This depends on the oiliness of your scalp and the amount/density of your hair. The more hair you have, the harder it is to distribute, so you need more product.
We want to help you find the right amount with a few tips. We recommend washing your hair twice. The first time you wash your hair, it is important to distribute the shampoo evenly over your entire scalp. Apply the shampoo to different points with your fingertips. Start by massaging it in and add some more shampoo if you notice that the shampoo is not evenly distributed everywhere. Foaming is not necessary for the first wash. It can also help to run a little water on your head to dilute the product and make it easier to distribute.
Once you feel the shampoo has been applied throughout, rinse it out. Repeat this process a second time, usually two pumps will be enough. The excess sebum will have been removed by then, which will be noticeable by the foam you now get immediately. This second wash will give you extra assurance that your scalp is clean and remove any remaining build-up.
Guidelines:
Less hair: 1 to 2 pumps
Normal density: 2 pumps
Lots of hair: 2 to 4 pumps
How often should I wash my hair?
This is a frequently asked question. The answer is: only if your scalp feels greasy or itchy. Many people wash their hair to redo their styling. If you want to do this without a greasy scalp, we recommend following your normal shower routine, but skip the shampoo part. Go straight to the conditioner. Shampoo is a cleanser that is only necessary if your scalp is dirty or greasy. The frequency is different for each person and can vary. For example, the week before your period your scalp may be greasier, or during stressful periods you may touch your hair more, which also makes your scalp greasier.
So, if your scalp is oily or itchy, use shampoo. If you want to shower, but your scalp is not oily, just use conditioner and rinse it out.
On average, you wash your hair 1 to 2 times a week. If you wash it more often, you may have an oily scalp. Our Mellon shampoo can help restore the balance, which may allow you to wash your hair less often over time.
Is the shampoo suitable for every scalp?
Our shampoo is suitable for most people, with the exception of people with scalp problems.
The main purpose of a shampoo is to cleanse the scalp without disturbing its natural balance. It should be mild but effective. Both too much sebum and too aggressive cleaning can cause problems. We are proud that our shampoo offers this perfect balance in cleaning!
While our shampoo is compatible with most scalp types, it will not cure scalp problems. However, we have seen positive results for people with dandruff, especially when combined with our oil.
There are some exceptions where our shampoo may not be successful, and for which we will create a separate line:
- Extremely dry: If your scalp is extremely dry (like psoriasis), our cleansing may be too harsh. We are developing a shampoo that cleanses extremely gently soon.
- Seborrheic: If you have a very oily scalp with crusts and eczema patches, our shampoo may be too mild. You need something a bit firmer, as long as it doesn’t clean aggressively. We’ll be developing an option for this soon too.
- Allergy to essential oils: If you are sensitive to essential oils, our future shampoo without scented oils is probably more suitable. You can always try it, because every oil reacts differently.
Please note: If you are switching from a synthetic shampoo, you may recognize yourself in one of the three exceptions, but the cause of your complaint is probably the aggressive cleanser or perfume in your current product. We always recommend starting with a natural product first, waiting two months and then assessing the real condition of your scalp. Give it a try!
Is the shampoo suitable for all hair types?
Eye opener! You don't choose shampoo based on your hair type but on your scalp (see previous question). A shampoo cleanses and you choose it based on your skin. You choose a conditioner based on your hair type. So you can safely overlook the claims of "shampoo for split ends" or "shampoo for dry hair" ;-) "Natural shampoo" or "Shampoo for a dry scalp" is accurate.
Is the shampoo according to the Curly Girl Method?
Yes, our shampoo meets the requirements of the Curly Girl Method. It is safe for all hair textures.
Can I use the shampoo if I have colored my hair?
Yes, our shampoo can also be used on colored hair.
Do you recommend the shampoo for gray hair?
Our shampoo is also ideal for gray hair.
How long does a bottle last?
Our shampoo lasts a long time! If you wash your hair twice a week, you can get about 20 to 25 washes out of one bottle. That's enough for about three months. If you wash your hair only once a week, the shampoo can even last up to six months.
