Seasonal Hair Loss: Everything You Need to Know and What You Can Do About It

You know that moment? You're standing in front of the mirror, running a brush through your hair, and… bam , it's covered in hair. You wash your hair and notice how the drain fills up faster and faster after your shower. And then comes that oppressive feeling: HELP, this is getting worse, I'm losing too much hair . What you're experiencing is seasonal hair loss .

What is hair loss anyway?

Everyone loses hair every day. On average, about 50 to 100 per day. It's part of the natural cycle : hair grows, rests, and then falls out to make way for new hair. So, hair loss is completely normal ! Without hair loss, there are no new, healthy hairs.

Yet, it can sometimes seem more pronounced, or become more noticeable during certain periods. There are several forms :

  • Normal hair loss (shedding): daily hair loss. You lose some hairs every day (about 50-100), which is part of the hair growth cycle.
  • Telogen effluvium : 'sudden form' of hair loss because more hairs enter the resting phase at the same time.
  • Androgenetic alopecia: hereditary hair loss, often visible in the temples or crown.
  • Alopecia areata: autoimmune hair loss, often starts in small round patches and worsens or subsides
  • Seasonal hair loss : In the fall (late August - October) and spring (late March - May) you often notice a peak in hair loss.

In this blog we focus on seasonal hair loss , a temporary form of shedding that often occurs in the fall and spring .

Why does seasonal hair loss occur?

The exact cause of seasonal hair loss is unclear . Some point to temperature changes, others to a vitamin D deficiency, and yet others to the natural cycle of an animal's coat, which also changes once winter arrives.

Scientific evidence

It remains a mystery to both us and scientists, but research shows that seasonal hair loss affects more women than men.

Research confirms that hair growth and hair loss vary by season:

  • A study of 823 women showed that the number of hairs in the resting phase peaks in the summer, leading to hair loss becoming more visible in the fall ( PubMed ).
  • Other studies also show that hair growth is slower in winter and increases in spring and summer ( PubMed ).
  • And if we look at Google searches, data analyses of search behavior confirm this pattern. For example, there are peaks in searches for "hair loss" in August/September and April/May ( ResearchGate ).

But there are also some logical reasoning

Autumn is that transitional phase, where we go from summer freedom to cozy coziness. From enjoying terraces and ice cream in the sun, to donning warm sweaters and hearing the leaves rustle under our feet. From festivals and beach days to movie nights under a blanket with hot chocolate. The season of pumpkin soup and cinnamon, of raindrops on the window and the first stove fires. But that's not all! Autumn is all about so much. Think of:

  • Summer damage is now taking its toll: sun, salt, and chlorine have thrown your scalp out of balance and/or weakened your hair. This causes your hair to fall out more quickly in the fall. Or your hair breaks off, which you mistake for hair loss. Read this blog post full of summer tips to prevent this in the future.
  • Vitamin D deficiency: The sunny summer days are slowly fading. We're getting less sunlight on our faces, which also means less vitamin D. Vitamin D is an important building block for your hair follicles and plays a major role in hair loss.
  • Colder weather and heating: temperature changes that irritate or dry out your scalp more quickly. And the scalp, well, that's the key to healthy hair.
  • And then the most common one, stress : it's September, school starts again, work is running at full speed... Everyone needs to get back into their natural rhythm. And that can sometimes leave some underlying tension.

Spring , on the other hand, feels like a new beginning. Blossoming trees, longer days, gradually rising temperatures, and all of nature (including you) awakening from its winter slumber. It's precisely during this period of transformation, when we adjust our daily routines to more daylight and our bodies adjust to a different rhythm, that we also see our hair respond to these changes.

  • Winter habits leave their mark: cold winds outside, dry heating indoors, and thick hats have weakened your hair and/or scalp. This can cause hair breakage or imbalance in the scalp.
  • The vitamin D deficiency persists: during the darker months, your body produces less vitamin D. Consider supplementation.
  • Your biological rhythm resets: just as animals shed their winter coats, our hair follicles also respond to the change of seasons. Old hair makes way for new growth.


How do you know if it's seasonal?

With seasonal hair loss, you don't see bald patches or inflammation. The hair loss is spread across your entire head, not just in one spot. It feels like a lot all at once, but fortunately, this form of hair loss is short-lived. It usually lasts 6 to 12 weeks and subsides naturally before your hair returns to its normal pattern.

Still, it can be insecure, and that's okay. But instead of focusing on what's falling out, try focusing on what's still there . Do you really notice your hair thinning? Or are you just panicking about what you see in your brush? You only need to worry when there 's visibly less hair on your head.

If hair loss continues for more than 3-4 months , or if you notice areas where your scalp becomes more visible or experiences itching, inflammation, hormonal issues, etc., then it is wise to consult a dermatologist or trichologist .


What helps against seasonal hair loss?

Good news! There are definitely things you can do to support your hair and scalp.

  • Eat "hair-friendly" : protein, iron, vitamin D, and B vitamins are your friends. A healthy body produces healthier hair. Consider blood tests if you suspect deficiencies.
  • Nourish your scalp : A healthy scalp is the foundation for healthy hair growth and strong hair. A gentle detox (like our clay ) removes the buildup that clogs hair follicles. How do you use the hair loss treatment?

You can use the Hair Loss Synergy with both the oil and the clay.

  • Mixing it with oil? Perfect for targeted nourishment of your hair roots. 10–15 drops of synergy per 35 ml of oil.
  • Add it to clay for an extra stimulating effect while cleansing. 10–15 drops of synergy per 35 g of clay.
  • Want to combine both? That's possible, but halve the dosage to avoid an overdose of the oils. 5-7 drops of synergy per 35 ml of oil and 5-7 drops of synergy per 35 g of clay.


The treatment step by step

Step 1: Feed oil

Fill the dispenser bottle with 35 ml of oil and add the synergy. Apply evenly to your scalp and hair. Massage gently and leave on for at least 15 minutes . One bottle is sufficient for 2–3 treatments.

Step 2: Prepare

Wet your scalp and hair thoroughly. Leave the oil in. Your hair and scalp should be thoroughly wet before applying the clay.

Step 3: Clay detox

Take 35–40 g of clay (about a generous handful) and distribute it first over your scalp and then through your lengths. You can add a little water to make it easier to distribute. Leave on for a maximum of 20 minutes , making sure the clay doesn't dry completely.

Step 4: Cleaning

Rinse thoroughly and then wash your hair twice with our shampoo . This leaves your scalp completely clean, fresh, and balanced.


Conclusion
