You try everything: scrunching curls, air-drying, taming frizz with leave-ins… but your natural texture remains " meh ." Not really defined, not really shaped. You might even think, " Maybe I just don't have curls? " ( I hear this so often sometimes as a curly-haired hairstylist 🤭)
Stop that right now! What's often really holding your hair back is a bad routine, oily buildup, or simply the lack of a good start.
In this blog post, I'll share with you the three most common mistakes that sabotage your curl routine and what you can do about them. Ready for some clear tips?

1. Your hair is clogged with build-up
Your texture can be beautiful, but if your scalp and hair are covered in residue from styling products, silicones, or oils, it won't stand a chance. This phenomenon is called buildup in the curl and hairdressing world, and it's literally a blockage for your curls.
How do you recognize it?
– Your hair feels dull or heavy
– Your styling doesn't work the way it used to
– Your scalp becomes greasy or itchy more quickly
What helps?
A clay treatment . A purifying clay acts as a reset. It removes buildup from your hair, purifies your scalp, and preserves your natural oils. No harsh shampoos, just a gentle detox.
Why a clay instead of a 'final wash' shampoo?
In the curly girl world, there's often talk about a " final wash " or " deep clean " shampoo to remove buildup. Unfortunately, these shampoos often contain harsh sulfates that strip all the natural oils and protective layers . That's a shame, because if you use gentle products the rest of the time, you don't want to strip it all away at once.
That's why it's better to choose green clay . This is the strongest cleansing clay, without drying out or weighing down your hair. This way, you get a thorough detox that's respectful of your hair and scalp .
Fun fact: Curly and natural hair stylists often use clay as the first step with new clients to fully unleash their natural texture. Think of it as a blank canvas where your texture can reemerge.

2. You're drying your hair wrong
Yes, even if you use all the right products, things can still go wrong during drying.
Air-drying may seem gentle on your hair, but it can cause frizz, lack definition, and a lifeless result. Especially for the wavy among us!
Or maybe you blow-dry your hair without a diffuser, and you'll literally blow out your curl pattern. Oops!
What helps?
A curl diffuser. Use a diffuser on low heat, hold your head upside down, and take your time. By setting your hair in its shape this way, your natural texture gets the space to truly shine. Need a tutorial? Check it out here .
Pro tip: Use our XXL diffuser and matching hairdryer . This way, you'll dry 3x faster and without any hassle. I use this dryer and diffuser daily in the salon. Find out more here .
3. You're not using styling products (or the wrong ones)
I hear so often: “I don't want anything in my hair, it feels so sticky.” Or “If I use styling, my hair will fall down.” Or “I don't want my hair to look ' "productive" looks"
But guess what? Natural texture, from waves to coils, needs guidance . Without styling products, your texture falls apart. No definition, no shine, no volume, just a pile of frizz.
What helps?
A light, nourishing gel for definition. Our Defining Gel is specially formulated to enhance your natural texture without that crispy crunch. Apply it to soaking wet hair, scrunch upward, and… let it work its magic. Find a full styling tutorial here .
If you have very light waves and soft curls, applying a stronger gel over the Defining Gel is recommended. This isn't currently (yet) in the Mellon range. But we're in the final stages of testing! And guys, I'm satisfied. It won't be long before our Strong Hold gel is available.
Pro tip : If you blow-dry your hair instead of air- drying it, the gel cast will dry faster. This will help the gel stay in place better and your hair will retain its texture longer.
Finally, think of it as a cycle
Texture is a living thing. It changes with the season, your hormones, and your routine. A reset with clay, diffusing at your own pace, and a little help from a good gel can let your hair breathe again.
And if you ever get lost, don't worry! Mellon is always there for you. We have plenty of blogs and videos, and are happy to answer your questions.
Good luck discovering your natural texture Mellons!
